RoTo Sketches: Tait SK

Michael Rotondi has practiced and taught architecture locally and internationally for over forty years, always operating from his base in Los Angeles. Digitizing these sketchbooks is a process that stretches back to the late 70s and early 80s, through the early days of SCI-Arc (Arch. '75, Director 1987-1997) and seminal projects from Morphosis (1975-1991) and RoTo Architects (1991-present) up to more recent times. These notes and fragments, worked on over time, would become the foundations of RoTo's practice and teachings today. ​ ​

 

The online archive, to be updated and added to periodically, includes selections of digital scans from the collection, descriptive texts, and audio recordings discussing the books and their contents.

The Japanese album sketchbooks produced by Moleskin contain one long sheet of paper folded into the size of a 3.5" x 5.5" or 5" x 8.25" book, accordion-like, with a length of 48-60 folded pages. Scans from these books feature continuously unfolding sketches, drawings, and notes, often project- or site-specific, evoking landscapes and exploring sections.
