Educational and agri-tourism are increasing in popularity, cultural tourism is already a mainstay of the Italian tourism industry, and golf is a proven recreational draw. Our proposal for Monte Argentario combines these activities in a single destination. Our goal to create a self-sustaining location - environmentally, culturally and socially - would ultimately sustain the spirit as well.
We always begin with an inventory of the culture, forms and stories embodied in the local landscape. We observed the pastoral character of the site that, like much of Tuscany, is world-renowned for its beauty, but also balanced and rich in tradition. Shaped by centuries of community and history, the area retains a complexity of land-use that satisfy many of the criteria we use in a post- industrial context to define “sustainability.”
Our proposal is for three landscapes: the traditional “Hill Town,” the “Pastoral Landscape,” and, at the edge of both, as well as at the edge of our imagination and memory, the “Virgilian Landscape” of myth and legend. The project surpasses a Hotel Complex or Golf Resort, to become a rich, layered environmentally and culturally self-sustaining landscape.
