Design for Wellbeing

Buildings and spaces designed to promote the wellbeing of inhabitants using industry standards (WELL, fitwel), holistic programming, and biophilic and active design.
Restorative Buildings &
Environments

With thoughtful and strategic design choices, the built environment has great potential to be a medium that supports healing and well-being. Landscape, materials, shape, color, layout and more become tools to bring harmony to the site, building and occupant.
As a style-agnostic layer to design that is appropriate for buildings of any type, wellness architecture affects the feeling and experience of a space rather than the look.
Considerations may include:
• Water and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
• Acoustics and Noise Mitigation
• Material Toxicity & VOCs
• Natural Materials and Features
• Sensory Friendly Environments
• Lifestyle & Luxury Features
• Kitchen and Food Production
• Security and Smart Features
• Wellness Certification (WELL, Fitwel)
• Overall Balance and Harmony (for both site and structure)
• Relationship with Land and Conscientious Building

In partnership with holistic practitioner and wellness design consultant El Larson, we offer the following scope of services:

• VOCs
• Electronics, appliances, and other contributors

• Environmental noise (freeway, airport)
• Mechanical noise (HVAC, electronics)
• Privacy

Kitchen
• Kitchen Arrangement
• Wellness Appliances
• Low VOC applications
• Non-porous surfaces
• Appropriate storage methods and techniques
• Task lighting

• Radiant temperature control
• Aroma therapy
• Task lighting
Smart Home
• Air & water quality sensors
• Lighting
• Temperature control
• Security & Surveillance
Biophilic Design
Appealing to humans’ innate tendency to connect with nature, this strategy incorporates natural elements and references to nature, including materials, colors, patterns, and outside views.
• materials
• indoor plants
• colors & textures
• aroma
Feng Shui
Feng Shui is the ancient system of selecting and arranging spaces and elements so energy can favorably move through, nourishing the building and inhabitants. In addition to layout, considerations include the surrounding landscape, elements, color, materials, and occupant health.
• Overall Balance & Support in Areas of Life
• Color/ Material Recommendations
• Element Features
• Placement Recommendations
o Energy flow
o Command position
• Landscape Recommendations
o Arrangement
o Plant color/ type
o Edible Landscape/ Aromatherapy gardens
o Power spots/ Meditation areas
Sacred Geometry
The practice of overlaying a symbolic geometric pattern or system on the site and structure to inform various aspects of design.
• Building Orientation
• Proportions
• Spatial Relationships
Space Clearing & Land Ceremonies
We believe regenerative practices start by building a respectful relationship with the earth that supports us and adopting the approach of living ‘with’ the land – not just ‘on’ it. These practices consider the past and future impacts of on the land, whether physical or energetic.
• Space Clearing and Energetic Land Balancing
• Groundbreaking and Land Ceremonies
• Tree Removal Ceremonies
Certificate Standards and Equivalents (WELL, fitwel)
Wellness building standards are applied to ensure healthy levels are met for air and water quality, sound, lighting and thermal comfort, and toxicity of materials. The framework and standards can be applied whether a building is seeking certification.
• Air Ventilation/ Filtration
• Water Filtration/ Ionization
• Lighting (Ambient, Task & Circadian Rhythm)
o Smart home systems (see above)
o Quality of light (temperature, color rendering, noise)
• Acoustics (see above)
• Low/ Non-Toxic Materials (see above)

Project: Contemporary Craftsman. A new home for a creative, holistic couple in an historic neighborhood of Los Angeles.Various sacred geometry forms [including the Shri Yantra and Golden Spiral] were explored to inform the layout of both site and structure. Settling on the Golden Spiral and client request for the home to be situated around a central courtyard, the design of the space evolved from there.

Project: The Little Building. The building sits in the ‘Relationship’ gua of the property [ruled by the Earth element]. In addition to the homeowners spending time in the space creating music together, the building will relieve the main home of an extensive instrument collection, supporting harmony in their relationship. The Little Building will be constructed partially of cinder block to reference the main home while supporting the Earth element. The full-height glazing will allow for ample natural light and airflow, and sound-absorbing curtains. Narrow walls on each side offer space for shelving. The angled walls and roof line will reduce wave cancellation, further supporting acoustics of the space.
