Oglala Lakota Fine Arts Center
1997 | Kyle, South Dakota

We worked with the Hecel Oyakapi Foundation and Oglala Lakota College from the initial planning and fund development phases of the Fine Arts Building on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The building was designed to house classrooms, a library and a black box theatre used for storytelling, performances, filmmaking and fine arts education. The scheme is divided into three parts according to function: a centralized black box theatre, the entry “TIPI” for ceremonial rituals and a long wing for classrooms, workshops and meeting rooms. The box is geometrically a golden rectangle and the TIPI is an equiangular (golden ratio) cone.
