Dorland Mountain Arts Colony
1993–1994 | Temecula, California

The Dorland Mountain Arts Colony covers nearly ten acres of a 300-acre Nature Conservancy preserve overlooking the Temecula Valley in California. Roto donated design-build services for a small cabin used as a painter’s studio and retreat. There is no electricity on the site and the only source of heat is a wood-burning stove. The project was conceived as a “tent” for working and a “cave” for sleeping, exploiting the natural light by using fabric for the roof. This handmade building was constructed using wood, lumber and lodge poles, concrete, steel cable and strap and fabric for the roof.
