Housing Prototypes 4 - Tilt Up — Precast
2003 | West Hollywood, California

This study is for a 21-unit complex on an urban site, surrounded by low to mid-rise housing. Tilt-up and pre-cast concrete is normally used for industrial applications because of its efficiencies in scale and installation. Its potential for smaller scale residential is tested here.

The site is dimensionally modulated by the construction logic balanced with the objective of space size and proportions, inside-outside living, privacy and flow. Privacy and openness are the lessons learned from R.M. Schindler’s house and his Falk Apartments. Being in solitude and living periodically in community are key factors to unit and site planning.

All of the units are conceived as single volumes that are subdivided by less than full height cores and walls. The cubic volume for each unit incorporates the adjacent exterior gardens. The entire site is landscaped for recreational use, and the 21 units are sized from 700-850 square feet to be used as live-work space.
