| Carlson-Reges House 1992–1996 | Los Angeles, California |
|||||
One of the clients was a builder and the other was a breeder and trainer of show dogs, and is active in the Los Angeles arts community. The house functions as a residence, art gallery and show dog kennel. To reflect the site — an industrial area in Los Angeles — the client requested an urban industrial exterior with a domestic, warm interior. Built with materials from the owners' salvage yard, the new building 'grows out' of the existing one, like progeny. There are gardens at ground levels, with patios, decks and plants at the upper levels. Two cylindrical tanks (formerly used for gasoline storage) were modified to create a swimming pool that also reflects the downtown skyline, and the other as a room within and a belvedere above. |
